Energized for STEM Academy, Incorporated opened its first campus in fall 2008 with the goal of aligning high school, college, and business-based activities across STEM areas (science, technology, engineering and math) within the broader school curriculum. Energized for STEM Academy schools are Houston Independent School District (HISD) charter schools that are tuition-free, premier college preparatory schools geared toward STEM-ulating the left and right brain of students in sixth through 12th grades. Of the 279 schools in the HISD system, the Energized for STEM Academy was the first school with STEM curricula recognized by the TEA as a STEM-designated program. Its designation has been reaffirmed annually.
The Energized for STEM Academy STEM-based program is designated by the Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) Initiative. The T-STEM Initiative is part of the Texas High School Project, a public- private initiative working to ensure that all Texas students leave high school prepared for college and careers in the 21st century economy. The Texas High School Project is a strategic alliance of the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the Governor’s Office the Texas Legislature, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, and the Communities Foundation of Texas.
Energized for STEM Academy was founded by Ms. Lois Bullock with the premise that it is the right of every student, regardless of their economic background, to have equal opportunity and equal access to high-quality education. The school offers a solid STEM-based educational foundation to enable students to successfully compete in the global workforce.
Community and parental involvement has assured that Energized for STEM Academy youth are properly educated and trained. Partnerships with institutions of higher education, local, state and national businesses, non-profit agencies and municipalities expose the students to a variety of career opportunities and are proven to be crucial to the academy’s success.
True to its vision, the 46 graduates who comprised the 2012 Inaugural Senior Class of Energized for STEM Academy, Incorporated Southeast Campus constituted a small school atmosphere with diverse learners and critical thinkers interested in STEM-related fields. All of the students graduated as Texas Scholars with either a Recommended Program or a Distinguished Achievement Program diploma plan. One hundred percent of the students graduated with college credits and were accepted into college.
At Energized for STEM Academy, each student follows an individualized graduation plan (developed with the help of a counselor and faculty) which will lead to either a recommended or distinguished diploma. Students are on an accelerated college preparatory track which includes dual credit (high school/college) courses. In addition to the rigorous STEM-emphasized college preparatory education, Energized for STEM Academy students receive curricular and extracurricular activities in the visual and performing arts.
Students are also immersed in interactive field experiences, summer enrichment programs and internships. The integrated approach is critical to effectively develop the whole child.
